Upcoming Events
THE CORNISH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS will, hopefully - and weather permitting! - take place over the weekend of March 5th-7th.
We realise that people who are newcomers to the game and unsure of their playing ability may feel intimidated by the formalism of full competition chess so a supplementary event - probably to be called the Penwith Cup competition - will be held concurrently with the other major Cornish championship events. Full details about all of these will be posted nearer to the actual dates.
Greetings Everybody!
Especially Juniors! We need more YOUNG players! If you're reading this and you're under 15 or are perhaps the parent of a youngster who is keen on chess but are unsure about how to meet up with other players then please
click here for the information you're seeking. It'll be nice to have you on board!
The County Match
In the match that took place between Devon and Cornwall at the Liskerret Centre on Saturday the 5th of December, not altogether surprisingly Devon ran out as the comfortable winners. They've outgraded us heavily for years and Cornwall generally feel that they've done well if they manage to win just a couple of games. That was the case this time too with only Jeremy Menadue on Board 1 and Robin Kneebone on Board 5 playing well enough to win their games. We drew 6, defaulted on 2 and lost the rest! The fixtures and individual results can be found here.
Glad Tidings
After a spell with nothing much to report it gives me pleasure to be able to say that there are now some interesting developments going on in chess in this county. Roger Grey recently informed me that Penwith chess club may well be re-forming shortly! According to him the players might be: David Saqui, Stefan Leaver, Neil Wride, Richard Humpleby, Geoff Amos, Don Turtle, Alex Markin, Percy Gill, Robert Dunn, Roy Summers, Robin Kneebone and Roger himself. This sounds like a revival! Out of consideration for the fact that some people might object to having their home address and e-mail addresses posted in public on a site such as this I will refrain for a couple of weeks from posting on the club contacts link the data I've been given about these players. If any of the men I've mentioned in this listing don't want their contact information posted on this website please let me know and I will see to it that you are not listed. Otherwise, I plan to include all of them! So, if you don't want to be listed, LET ME KNOW!
To Falmouth chess club goes the credit for being the instigators of a recent FM radio broadcast that dealt with chess in Cornwall.Unfortunately it has not been possible to post some files about it here as I had hoped. If anyone has more information by all means let me know as I'm sure we'd all enjoy hearing it.

The new gradings for this season have been released by Ian and are downloadable by clicking on the link above. May I remind everybody that because of the revised way the gradings have been calculated this season, old gradings limits that used to apply to some events are no longer applicable and have been 'upfloated' to reflect everybody's generally higher gradings. The pertinent new limits are:
164 or below to be eligible to play in the Minor League,
145 or below to be eligible to play in the Falmouth Cup,
135 or below to be eligible to play in the Under 135, (formerly the Under 115 Cup) and
106 or under to be eligible to play in the Penwith Cup.
Please note Ian George is responsible for posting the various tables for this website. (He has special software for doing this that I don't.) As before when submitting results please send copies to him as well as myself.
Thank you.

The Revised Grading System
An explanation
of how the gradings are computed.
Quite a useful resource for those who are curious about these matters and
would like a simple way to find out more about a particular player (opponent?)
is: I know all about you!
where you just enter in the name of the individual you're curious about, hit
'enter' and away you go!
